Florence Walton Poland, 88, died Saturday, May 26, 2018 in Hampstead, North Carolina after several years of declining health. Florence was born in Washington, DC on July 24, 1929 to Clarence Jay Poland and Cameron Pearson Poland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Jay Poland and her sister, Jean Cameron Poland.
She was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton. Florence graduated from Limestone College in Gaffney South Carolina and taught Science at Williamsburg Junior High School in Arlington, Virginia for most of her teaching career. Once retired, she moved to her home in beloved Morganton. Florence was driven by her duty to family and exemplified a determination to support, manage and honor those in her circle, the family matriarch.
She leaves behind a nephew, John Cameron Poland; a niece, Nancy Galt Poland Taylor; two great nephews; one great niece and one great, great niece.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Marshall A. Jolly officiating.
