Ford Winter of Morganton, NC, passed away Friday, November 18, 2022.
He was born in Ossining, NY on June 26, 1937, and he spent most of his life close to the Long Island Sound in Rye. He enjoyed boating, and his last boat was a tugboat, the Richard B. Owen.
In 1955, he had joined the US Navy and served four years about the submarine, USS Conger. It was then that he and fellow shipmate, Billy Ray Jarrett (of Morganton) began their lifelong friendship with a common interest in automobiles.
Ford’s interest drew him to make many trip from New York to visit Billy Ray, Fred Propst, Howard Keys, and his sons and friends. At the Keys Used Cars lot, he spent many happy hours listening to the stories of humor and adventures told there. He would retell those stories in New York, so when he retired from teaching, he and his wife, Neva, moved to Morganton, delighted with the beauty of the mountains and the friendliness of the people living here. Ford and Neva were living here at the time of his passing. Their beloved sons, John and Kevin, hope to settle here as well.
A celebration of Ford’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the Rye Recreation Center, 281 Midland Avenue, Rye, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made to Save the Bird Homestead, 624 Milton Road, Rye, NY 10580 or to the Ford Winter Fund to promote studies and actions to protect Long Island Sound waters.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family.
