Frances Louise Crooks Stamey, 92, formerly of Glen Alpine, NC went home to the Lord on Friday, September 16, 2016. She passed away from natural causes at her daughter's home in Dothan, AL. Louise was born on July 3, 1924 in Wake County, NC to Rebecca and John Crooks. The family moved to Burke County when Lake James was being built. They operated Crooks Grocery at the Canal Bridge which elicited some of Louise's most vivid memories.
Louise was a very loving and caring mother to her family and everyone who knew her. She was a devoted Christian and a member of Glen Alpine First Baptist Church. She was a hair dresser for over 35 years and also worked at the NC School for the Deaf. She was a Girl Scout leader for over 25 years. Louise was a Sunday school teacher throughout her life. She enjoyed crafts to include quilting, crocheting, and flower arranging. She sold these craft items and wood working items made by her husband at the Jamestown Flea Market for several years. In her later years she was an avid reader. In the last year, she thoroughly enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles on her electronic tablet.
She is survived by a son, Marvin Alfred (Junior) Stamey, Jr. (Tana) of Swansea, SC; daughters Kim Mauney (James) of Morganton; Pam Stamey (Steve Brown) of Dothan, AL; her sisters and brothers, John Crooks, Jr. of Marion, Nancy Newton of Morganton, Anna Laura Jaynes of Charleston, TN, Jimmy Crooks of Morganton, Carl Crooks of Icard; grandchildren, Robbie Stamey, Rachel Loven, Phillip Mauney and Heather Mauney; great-grandchildren Amanda Loven, Seth Loven, Elijah Stamey and Brayden Mauney. She was also loved by her great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Alfred Stamey; her step-mother, Mary Crooks; son, Steve Brewer; sisters, Naomi Johnson, Pauline Yancey, Mary Martha "Dinkie" Cooper; and brother, Earl Crooks.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday, September 19, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, September 20 at Glen Alpine First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kim Baker and the Rev. John Terry officiating. Mr. David Stevenson will be providing the music. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
