Gail Ann Whisenant, 55, of Morganton passed away at Valdese Hospital on Sunday, April 22, 2007 after a battle with cancer. Gail, a native of Morganton, was a lifelong resident of Burke County. She was born August 17, 1951 to the late John Clifton (Cliff) Whisenant and Ernestine Miller Whisenant. Gail was educated within the Morganton School System and graduated from Morganton High School in 1969. She attended Western Carolina State University and graduated with a degree in social sciences. In her career as a social worker and social services administrator, she worked for a number of health and human services agencies in Burke and McDowell counties. In addition to her parents, Gail was preceded in death by a brother Albert (Bert) Clifton Whisenant and sister-in-law Margaret (Peggy) Griffin Whisenant.
She is survived by a brother, John Murray Whisenant of Lewiston, Idaho; a sister, Mary Helen Young and husband, Stephen Young of Calabasas, California; a niece, Stephanie Young of Washington DC; a nephew, Jeffrey Young of Seattle, Washington; along with an aunt, two uncles, and numerous loving and cherished cousins living in the Carolinas and surrounding states, and in Wyoming and nearby western states.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery on Thursday, April 26 at 11:00AM with Pastor Michael Riley of Calvary Lutheran Church officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Burke County Public Library, 204 S.
