Gary Hartley, 70, of Morganton, NC passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2023 while surrounded by his family.
Born in Kansas City, MO on February 17, 1953, he was the son of the late Charles Dale Hartley, Sr. and Marian Christine Brochtrup Hartley.
Gary was an active member of North Morganton United Methodist Church. He organized many fundraisers, sang in the choir, was the head of the columbarium committee, was a past president of the United Methodist Men, and served on various boards over the years. He also was the teacher of the New Dimensions Sunday School Class. In years past, Gary was active at Disciples of Christ Church in Clarksville, TN.
Mr. Hartley retired after many years as a project manager contracted through Duke Energy. He was actively involved in the renovation of the power plant on Lake James.
Gary was also active in the community, serving on the boards of the Burke Literacy Council and the House of Refuge Ministries.
Gary was a loving, generous man. He never judged anyone and was always willing to help those in need. He loved spending time with his family.
Mr. Hartley is survived by his wife, Grace Williams Hartley; daughters, Sarah Hartley Gant (Dustin) and Jessica Lynn Hartley; step-children, Virginia Nichols (Chris) and Robert Johnston; grandchildren, Matthew and Ryan Nichols; siblings, Shirley Zielke (Dave), Christine “Tena” Wood (Ken Cross), Berny Hartley (Theresa), and Connie Cox (Jimmy); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hartley; and sister, Jo Anne Hogan.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2023 at North Morganton United Methodist Church. The memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. in the church with Rev. David Rorie officiating.

What a terrific, kind and Christian man he was…He is leaving a beautiful legacy for his family and he will be missed.
