Georgia Lail McCall Greene

Georgia Lail McCall Greene, 101, went to be with her Lord on Friday, March 1, 2013. She was born in McDowell County on March 18, 1911 and was a daughter of the late Perry Oscar Lail and Effie Samantha Noblitt Lail. Mrs. Greene was the oldest member of Bethel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was involved in the children’s ministries. She also served as church custodian and bought the first bus for Bethel Baptist. She graduated from Glen Alpine High School in 1930 and presently was the oldest living graduate of the school. She was a woman of great faith who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, gardening, canning, and reading. She was loved by everyone who met her and was an inspiration to others with her sweet smile and spirit.Surviving are her sons, Paul McCall and his wife, Doris "Tenny", David McCall and his wife, Judy, and Charles McCall all of Morganton; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn McCall of Morganton; and a step-daughter, Phyllis Hogan of Newport, TN. Mrs. Greene was blessed with 65 grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren who affectionately called her "Granny."In addition to her parents, Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her first husband, James A. McCall; her second husband, Oakus Greene, sons, Jimmy, Jerry, and Wayne McCall; daughters, Jean Merrill and Edith Buff; grand-daughter, Patsy Merrill, brothers, Bill, Jonas, and Troy Lail; sisters, Eva Blackburn, Dora Satterwhite, and Marjorie Lail; sons-in-law, Warren Merrill and Charles Buff; and a daughter-in-law, Linda McCall.Funeral services for Mrs. Greene will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Cline officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Sossoman Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in her memory to Bethel Baptist Church, 3861 Pax Hill Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
