Geraldine Mayfield Powell

Geraldine Mayfield Powell, 74, of Morganton, NC died Monday, August 4, 2014. Born in Burke County, NC on September 1, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Walter Eli Mayfield and Hettie Mae Whisenant Mayfield. Geraldine was a member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church. She loved flowers, animals, and nature, enjoyed sewing quilts, and was a collector of bells and shot glasses. She was a wonderful cook, baker, and canner; she won the title of “Biscuit Queen of Burke County” from WMNC.

A loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Geraldine is survived by her husband, Bobby Gene Powell of the home; children, Keith Mayfield and his wife, Janie, of Morganton, Jessie “Polly” Presnell and her husband, Greg, of Micaville, NC; Bobby G. Powell, Jr. of Morganton; and Dennis Powell of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Jessica Mayfield Stroupe and her husband, Tim, and Stephen E. Dellinger; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Yelton and Justin Yelton; brothers, her twin, Gerald Mayfield and his wife, Vergie, of Morganton and Edward Mayfield of Glen Alpine, NC; and a sister, Ruby Metcalf and her husband, Burlin, of Glen Alpine.

In addition to her parents, Geraldine was preceded in death by three siblings, Louise Benfield, James Mayfield, and Leroy Mayfield.

The funeral will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2014 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Rev. Jeff Beach, the Rev. Clyde Buckner, and Dr. Jack Shoemaker officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. prior to the service. The graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 7, 2014 at Burke Memorial Park.
