Glenn Thierolf Lloyd was born July 17, 1926 to Lucille Kruger Lloyd and Glenn Morgan Lloyd in Rochester, NY. He served in the US Navy during WW II from 1944 to 1946 and in the Korean “War” from 1951-1953. He graduated from Geneseo State Teachers' College in 1954 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and Speech and Dramatic Arts. He was graduated from Gallaudet University (College) in 1957 with an M.S. in Deaf Education and earned a doctoral degree (Ed.D.) from The University of Tennessee in 1968.
Glenn was blessed with a wonderful wife, Carol, and they had nearly 59 years of a beautiful marriage. They are survived by two sons, Thierolf Thomas Lloyd, wife Brenda and son Lawson Thierolf Lloyd, Peter Benson Lloyd and wife Jolynn and son, Isaac Yan Lloyd, a brother Robert Frederick Moore and wife Sandra a sister-in-law, Gloria Lloyd, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their offspring.
Glenn was very active in the fields of education (deaf) and Vocational Rehabilitation (deaf), teaching at the Rochester, NY School for the Deaf, New Mexico School for the Deaf, Cincinnati Public Schools (Classes for Deaf Children), and The Nebraska School for the Deaf as the Primary Department Principal. He taught at Omaha University, The University of Tennessee, New York University, and Lenoir-Rhyne University.
In addition to teaching, he served as Editor of a the PRWAD Journal (now the ADARA Journal) for about eighteen years, Served as President of PRWAD (ADARA), Executive Secretary of the NC Association of the Deaf, administered a grant to place TTY's in various public facilities (hospitals, e.g.) in North Carolina. He was also primarily responsible for convincing North Carolina to approve a highly discounted rate for long distance telephone service using TTY's. He served two terms as Chair of the North Carolina Rehabilitation Council, served as Chair of the NC Schools for the Deaf Board, was Editor of various regional and national workshop proceedings in Rehabilitation for Deaf Persons including one two-week international workshop. He also was a speaker at a congress for the deaf in Yugoslavia and consulted with a speech and hearing center in Zagreb seeking a grant from the US. Above all else, Glenn thoroughly enjoyed working with deaf persons including joining in impromptu singing at various meetings attended by deaf and hearing persons. They sang late at night away from the sleeping areas. You had to hear them to believe it!
A funeral Mass will be celebrated by Reverend Ken Whittington at St. Charles Borromeo Church at 11 a.m., Friday, September 3, 2021 following interment at Burke Memorial Park. A luncheon will follow the Mass where the family will receive friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
