Gray “Pop” Riddick passed away July 28, 2024. He was born in Linthicum, MD, on February 8, 1941. He attended the Severn School and graduated from the University for Maryland and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Gray began his professional career with DuPont in 1964 (6 days post-graduation). His career with DuPont took the family to Virginia, Delaware, New York, Texas, and North Carolina before his retirement in 1996. Gray’s “second half” involved serving his community both through leadership positions with Habitat for Humanity and more volunteer roles than you could count in Davidson, Chocowinity, and Morganton.

A man of strong faith, he was very active member of many churches, serving as an Elder, Deacon, and on numerous committees focused on both the spiritual and business needs of his congregations.

He loved an adventure, an avid sailor, firetruck chaser, and going for drives, just to explore.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bleakley Riddick; daughter Susan Riddick Cafferty (Brett), Knoxville, TN and Albert Gray Riddick (Mary Bennett), Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Brett Cafferty (Rojin), Sam Cafferty (Abbey), Jessica Cafferty, Charlie Riddick, and Katie Gray Riddick. Special cousin Larry Riddick, his wife Patty and family. Bonus daughter Rachel Bradley and her children. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert Franklin Riddick and Edith Roper Riddick, and brother Charles Franklin Riddick.

The celebration of life will be held at 3pm, Thursday, August 1, 2024 at Gateway Bible Church, 222 Believer's Way, Morganton, NC 28655.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Healthcare Foundation, 500 Lenoir Rd, Morganton, NC 28655, memo: Grace Ridge Resident Endowment Fund.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Dear Betty and family, Rick just sent me Gray’s obituary. My sympathy and condolences to you all! My thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through grieving for Gray. it was wonderful seeing you and Gray at Dick services in September.

Dear Betty, We just heard from Russell Horman of Gray's passing. He was a highly respected brother of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, where I (Jim) first met him over six decades ago. Although our lives diverged after college, we were blessed to meet you at the Hormans' beautiful Smith Mountain Lake home about 5 years ago, where we spent a nice "getaway" with you, Gray, Russell and Bonnie. We pray that you find the strength to carry on as Gray would want you to. May God's blessings sustain you. Lori & Jim Putman

So sad to hear about Gray. He and Betty were such fun and dedicated volunteers at the North Carolina Estuarium in Washington, NC, for many years. He was a captain on our River Roving boat tours of the Pamlico River and always got wonderful compliments from riders about his knowledge and enjoyable stories of local history. Our love and best wishes for Betty and the Riddick family in this time - we know Gray is with the Lord and at peace. Tom and Jackie (Woolard) Stroud
