Grier S. "Joe" Short

Grier S. "Joe" Short, 96 of Morganton, NC died Monday, June 2, 2014 at College Pine Nursing Center, Valdese. Born May 28, 1918 in Cleveland County, NC, he was a son of the late Zero and Zora Hunt Short. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. For many years, Joe owned Shorts Cars on S. Sterling St. and later on Fleming Drive. He was a member of Drexel First Baptist Church and a former member and deacon of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hattie Mae Murphy Short; his second wife, Bonnie Settlemyre Short; a son, Deanes Grier Short; and a brother, Charlie Short.

Surviving are his grandson, Deanes "Dean" Grier Short, II and his wife, Cassie Barker of Franklin, TN; a granddaughter, Lisa Spencer of Boise, ID; great grandchildren, Grier and Levi Short, and Griffin Spencer; a brother, Zane Short of Morganton; sisters, Charlene Blevins and Loulamae Morrison both of Morganton; a brother-in-law, Phifer Murphy of Morganton; and a number of nephews and nieces.

The funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, June 6, 2014 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Dr. Larry Cline officiating. Burial with military honors by the N. C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
