Harry A. Ingram

Harry A. Ingram, 79, of Morganton, NC died Saturday, June 4, 2011 at his residence with his family at his side. Born in Rutherford County, NC on May 26, 1932, he was the son of the late Harry Allen Ingram and Meredith Almedia Lancaster Ingram. Harry was a U.S. Air Force combat veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where he had served as music director, treasurer, interpreter for the deaf, and was active in the choir.Harry loved his family, fishing, gardening, livermush, Duke Blue Devils Basketball, and a good political debate. A tremendously talented musician, he performed in many bands over a period spanning 50+ years. He was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College and received his master’s degree from Appalachian State University. He enjoyed 20 years of retirement from the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.Harry is survived by his wife, Doris Whitener Ingram of the home; a daughter, Kristin Ingram of Houston, TX; a brother, Jim Ingram and wife, Vivian, of King, NC; a sister, LaVerne Simpson and husband, Ralph, of Camden, SC; brothers-in-law, Gary Whitener and Wynn Whitener and wife, Lora, all of Morganton; close and loving nephews, Zane and Cameron Whitener of Morganton; a number of other nieces and nephews; and a canine companion, Coco.In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelley Rose.The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Comforti officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 1206 Salem Road, Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
