Helen Louise Watts Chapman, 95 of Morganton, NC passed away, Saturday, October 12, 2024. Born on May 2, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Roland and Jane Watts. Helen was a previous member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Valdese and Morganton First Church of God.

Helen was a spunky and feisty lady who loved being around people. Even in her elder years, Helen’s personality would shine through, whether she was gossiping, telling a story from childhood, or bragging about her family. She was never shy in her opinions nor in her love for others. She was a great cook and was known for her pound cakes and deviled eggs. She was also notorious for her less-than-perfect driving skills. Helen always thought about others and had a servant’s heart. She loved her animals, but most of all, she loved her daughter, Donna. The two were a mother-daughter duo who fought like sisters but loved like Jesus. She thought the world of Donna’s husband, Scott, and was forever proud of the life they built together. Helen’s legacy began as a single mother to Donna, but she lives on through her three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Helen is survived by her grandchildren, Grace Powell Carroll (Ben), Seth Powell (Elizabeth), and MaryKate Powell Hester (Tony); great-grandchildren, Nora Jane Carroll, Adeline Grace Powell, Emma Elizabeth Powell, Jackson Brooks Powell, Ryn Elise Hester, and Auden Kathleen Hester; son-in-law, Scott Powell; and a number of nieces and nephews and extended family.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Chapman; daughter, Donna W. Powell; and a number of brothers and sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Burke Memorial Park.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
