Henry Hunter George, 76, passed away peacefully Monday, January 16, 2017 at the Burke Hospice House in Valdese, NC following a brief illness.
He enjoyed calling Morganton home for the past 23 years. He leaves his son, Rick George and wife Beverly of Carrollton, VA; son Ryan George and girlfriend Rose Winters of Tarpon Springs, FL; his brother, Critz George and wife Marcela of Albuquerque, NM, two grandchildren Darius and Corrin, 4 granddogs, a grandcat, and many close friends.
Born in Raleigh on 19 July 1940, the son of William F. George and Evelyn (Horton) George, he was a lifelong resident of his beloved state of North Carolina and lived in Raleigh, Black Mountain, Asheville and Morganton throughout his lifetime.
In his early years, he worked in the local music business in Raleigh promoting bands. He then worked in the Black Mountain juvenile detention center, followed by a long sales career in the moving and trucking industry.
He had a tremendous passion for genealogy and history, and enjoyed tracing his family roots, as well as helping others research their genealogy.
He served on the board of directors of the Asheville Rotary Club and was a member of Burkmont Baptist Church of Morganton for over 20 years.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 pm, Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Burkemont Baptist Church (4668 Burkemont Road, Morganton). The funeral will be held at 3 pm at the church with the Rev. Eddy Bunton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690 or to Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
