Herbert “Herb” Hussey

Herbert “Herb” Hussey, 73, of Valdese, NC, passed away Monday, February 18, 2019. Born in Chatham Co., (Siler City, NC) on August 3, 1945, he was the son of the late Odis E. Hussey and Virginia M. Hussey of Moore Co.

Herb attended high school in High Falls, NC. Upon graduation, he immediately entered the United States Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged from the Marines, he accepted employment with the Asheboro Police Department in Randolph Co. After being with the Police Department for a few years, he applied for and was accepted by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Upon completion of training, Herb was immediately assigned to Robeson Co. (Lumberton NC). Later, Herb transferred to Mecklenburg Co. After ten more years, he was asked to transfer to Wake Co. for duty at the Governor’s Mansion.

Herb, after the election, transferred to Moore Co., where he received a gunshot wound that ended his Patrol career and had to retire from the NCSHP, which he loved so dearly.

After surgeries and rehab, he returned to Charlotte, NC and became an investigator for a large law firm. Later, he moved to Morganton and became employed by the Department of Corrections at the newly opened (IMPACT) boot camp. He then transferred to Probation and Parole as a surveillance officer. He completed 10 years and retired again. He was also a member of the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.

In addition to his parents, Herb is preceded in death by a baby sister, Jeannie.

Herb is survived by his wife, Kathy C. Hussey of the home; daughter, Amanda D and husband, William Grady; grandson, Anthony of Lenoir- Rhyne University, Gavin and Gunnar Grady also of Morganton; son, Bradley E. and Marie Hussey, of Lumberton NC; numerous step-sons, grand and great grandchildren; sister, Lynda H. and husband, Howard Brewer of Bennette, NC; brother, Bobby (Dale) and wife, Jeannie Hussey of Clinton, SC.

Herb was a member of Mount Home Baptist Church. Herb loved and praised his church family.

The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Friday, February 22, 2019 in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by Table Rock Marine Corp League.

Memorial contribution may be made to the Mt. Home Baptist Church Building Fund.
