Howard Banks Stevens, 78, of Morganton, NC died Friday, February 12, 2016. Born in Union County, NC on June 27, 1937, he was the son of the late Allie Gray Stevens and Sara Elizabeth Schell Stevens. Howard loved to garden and do woodworking. He was a quiet man with a gentle soul and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Howard was a veteran of the US Marines and was a member of the Inaugural Parade for President Eisenhower.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brother, Harry Gray Stevens and sister, Shirley Jean Suddreth.
He is survived by his wife, Rae Victoria Gurley Stevens; daughter, Sheila Stevens Coffey and husband, Stanley of Morganton; granddaughter, Ashley Singleton and husband, Jason; and grandson, Josh Coffey; great-grandchildren, Payson Singleton and Henleigh Coffey; and sister, Mary McGalliard.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Salem United Methodist Church Parlor. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Abby Kocher officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the US Marines.
