Howard W. Barrier

Howard W. Barrier, Sr., 68, of Fish Hatchery Road, Morganton, NC, died Sunday, October 12, 2008 after several months of declining health. Born in Burke County, NC on May 15, 1940, he was the son of the late Paul William Barrier and Ollie Clark Barrier. He was a member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church. Howard was a member of the graduating class of 1958 of Crossnore High School. He retired from Harris Teeters in Morganton with twenty years of service. He was an avid hunter and outdoor lover, as well as a member of the Cane Creek Hunting Lodge.Mr. Barrier is survived by his wife, Glenda Tucker Barrier of the home; a son, Howard Barrier, Jr. and wife, Pamela, of Morganton; a daughter, Margie Sturgill and husband, Tim, of Churchville, MD; grandchildren, Timothy Sturgill, Jr., Taylor Sturgill, Paul Barrier, and John Barrier; a sister, Josie Taylor and husband, Buster, and family of Jonas Ridge, NC; aunts, Roxie Franklin, Savannah Beam, Ethel Clark, and Effie Barrier; and his extended family.The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Neal Brantley, Rev. Charles Sisk, and Rev. Tony Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour. At other times the family will be at the Barrier residence.
