James Abernethy Simpson, 90, of Morganton, NC died Saturday, January 30, 2016. Born in Burke County, NC on January 23, 1926, he was the son of the late James Reid Simpson and Margaret Ethel Newton Simpson. James was a Veteran of the US Navy where he served as a Corpsman from October 19, 1944 to May 29, 1946 during WWII. He was a member of The North Carolina Bar Association for 60 plus years and was a well-known local attorney in Burke County. James was a longtime member of Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge 217. He was a wonderful Father and Grandfather who loved his family dearly. James was a member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel R. Simpson.
He is survived by daughter, Laura Julian Jurosko; sons, James Locke Simpson and Daniel Boyden Simpson; grandchildren, Ashley Jett Jurosko, Carrie Lake Jurosko and Welborn Simpson Dellinger and Husband, Bradley; as well as a number of extended family members.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m., until 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with Rev. Yvonne Thurman officiating. Burial will follow in the Glen Alpine Cemetery with military honors provided by the US Navy and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Oxford Orphanage, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.
