James Bennett Stamey, 78, of Morganton, NC passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017.  He was born on November 20, 1938 in Burke County to the late Oscar Stamey and Lola Whisnant Stamey.

James worked as a truck driver for B & L Feed and Roper Lumber.  He was well known for his many years of doing tractor work, hauling gravel, mowing and sowing yards.  There wasn’t much he didn’t know how to do when it came to outdoor duties.  In his younger years, James coached little league baseball at the Morganton Recreation Center, winning two North Carolina State Championships in the 1970’s.  He always had a heart for helping people and often gave away dollar bills he folded up into the shape of a shirt.  These memories will last forever.

James loved the Lord and was a member of Catawba Valley Baptist Church where he served many years as deacon, teacher, and choir member.  His children, whom he loved dearly took care of him faithfully and stood by him until God called him home.

Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Randy Stamey; daughter, Vickie York and husband, Danny; siblings, Charles Stamey and wife, Margaret, Ned Stamey and wife, Jane, Helen Bryant, Robert Stamey, and Tommy Stamey and wife, Ann; and sister-in-law, Louise Stamey of Flagstaff, Arizona.  James was blessed with a loving and faithful caregiver, Denise Anderson whose children and grandchildren, Nikki, Alisha, Shane, Bentley, and Kathrine brightened his days with their visits.  Also, special thanks to a lifelong friend, Calvin Morrison.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Frances Whisnant Stamey and a brother, Bill Stamey.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m., Monday, September 11, 2017 at Sossoman Funeral Home.  The service will be held at 3:00 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Thom Hartman officiating.  Burial will follow at Catawba Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catawba Valley Baptist Church, 107 Valley View Street, Morganton, NC  28655.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
