James Earl Smith, 90, of Summers Rd., Morganton died Sunday, December 09, 2007, at Autumn Care of Drexel following a period of declining health. He was born in Burke County on February 15, 1917 and was a son of the late James "Ed" Smith and Sarah Jane Mull Smith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Addie Lee Bennett Smith; his son, Marshall Winfred Smith; brother, Lloyd Smith; and by sisters, Ruth Hull, Bernice Smith, and Ruby Ollis. Mr. Smith was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.Surviving are his daughter, Linda Smith Lowery and her husband, Charles, of Morganton; his twin sister, Esther Pearl Smith Huffman, of Morganton; a brother, Shirley A. Smith, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Tina Huffman, Marshall Smith, Jr., Amanda Smith, Scott Smith, and Anita Smith Johnson; great-grandchild, Cassie Shelton; and step-grandchildren, Rickey Lowery and Linda Allen.Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Larry Cline officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 2396 Enola Rd., Morganton, NC 28655 or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
