James Earl Smith

James Earl Smith, 90, of Summers Rd., Morganton died Sunday, December 09, 2007, at Autumn Care of Drexel following a period of declining health. He was born in Burke County on February 15, 1917 and was a son of the late James "Ed" Smith and Sarah Jane Mull Smith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Addie Lee Bennett Smith; his son, Marshall Winfred Smith; brother, Lloyd Smith; and by sisters, Ruth Hull, Bernice Smith, and Ruby Ollis. Mr. Smith was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.Surviving are his daughter, Linda Smith Lowery and her husband, Charles, of Morganton; his twin sister, Esther Pearl Smith Huffman, of Morganton; a brother, Shirley A. Smith, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Tina Huffman, Marshall Smith, Jr., Amanda Smith, Scott Smith, and Anita Smith Johnson; great-grandchild, Cassie Shelton; and step-grandchildren, Rickey Lowery and Linda Allen.Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Larry Cline officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
