James Edward Smith, 84, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

Born in Burke County, NC, he was the son of the late Jess Smith and Rhoda Huffman Smith.

James was a member of First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine. He was an avid outdoorsman, and his hobbies included bear hunting, fishing, and carpentry. James was also an accomplished gardener with a huge garden; he loved sharing what he grew.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 54 years, Brenda Kincaid Smith; sons, Stephen Smith (Stephanie) and Bryan Smith; and grandchildren, Hunter Smith (Lillianna) and Katelyn Smith (Aaron).

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by seven sisters, Eula, Norma, Ollie, Bertha, Mildred, Katie, and Nancy.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Burke Memorial Park with Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Military honors will be provided by the NC National Guard.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Ed was a friend for a long time. He help me learn the construction trade and on a personal side was always showing me better ways in the garden in which he was a master. We both loved to hunt and have many great memories. My deepest condolences to Brenda, Stephen , Brian and their families
