James “Jay” William Self

James “Jay” William Self, 78, of Morganton went home to be with the Lord and his loving wife on Saturday, September 28, 2019.  Born in Burke County, NC on September 8, 1941, he was the son of the late Caldwell Eugene Self and Jennie Lorine McDaniel Self.  Jay was a member of Mtn. View #2 Baptist Church.  He retired from the Western Correctional Center.  Jay was a simple man who enjoyed cutting wood and sitting on his porch.  A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Jay is survived by his daughter, Christy Mays (Richie) of Morganton; grandson, Landon Mays; brother, Edward Eugene Self; sisters, Mildred Self Thames and Patsy Ann Self Stamey; and a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Farris Self; daughter, Shelia Annette Self; brother, Ben Junior Self; and sister, Mary Self Marcus.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home.  The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Mtn. View #2 Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Mashburn officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
