James “Jimmy” D. Hawkins, 69, of Morganton passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Born in Burke County, NC on January 4, 1949, he was the son of the late Herman George Hawkins and Minnie Mae Walker Hawkins. Baptized at a young age, he was a member of Mt. Home Baptist Church. Jimmy was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church where he had served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He loved studying the Bible and brought several people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
He was a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran of the Vietnam War, a farmer for 25 years, and retired from DPS after 18 years. He was a Master Gardener, member of the Burke County Cattlemen Association, and a charter member of the Burke County Farmer’s Market.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Jimmy is survived by his wife, Sandra Holder Hawkins of the home; son, Aaron James Hawkins (Heidi) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Abby and Connor Hawkins; brother, Stephen “Steve” Hawkins of Morganton; and a number of nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends from 9 – 11 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Mt. Home Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
