James Lee “Jim” Murphy, 74, of Morganton, NC died Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Born in Yancey County, NC on March 25, 1941, he was the son of the late John Murphy and Thelma Gardner Murphy. Jim was a member of Nowlings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and sang in the church with his wife. He retired from Henredon with 20 years of service and enjoyed playing the guitar.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mollie Bailey Murphy of the home; a son, Wesley Murphy and his wife, Trena, of Greenville, SC; a daughter, Melinda Cooke and her husband, Jimmy, of Marion, NC; a step-son, Robert Wishon and his wife, Betty, of Halifax, NC; grandchildren, Shannon, Ashley, Tyler, Taylor, Zachary, Joey, Trevor, Robin, Samantha, Tammy, Christy, John, and Demond; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Johnny, Jerry, Paul, and Bob Murphy; two sisters, Gladys Buck and Faye Boone; and a number of nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Murphy.
The family will receive friends Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Nowlings Chapel Free Will Baptist Church from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Darvy Hensley and Mr. Mark Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
