James Oliver Suttles, 80, of Morganton went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 13, 2018. Born in Burke County, NC on February 17, 1938, he was the son of the late Andrew Suttles and Martha Smith Suttles. James was a founder of New Grace Church and also attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. James worked as a maintenance supervisor for Environmental Inks as well as many other places. He was an avid church goer and a member of the gospel group, The Joyful Sounds. He loved being outdoors.
Mr. Suttles is survived by his son, James Michael Suttles; daughter, Susan Suttles Thompson; grandchildren, Michelle Jakab, Ethan Thompson, and Michaela Suttles; great-grandchildren, Devin Mykel Jakab and Trinity Dawn Jakab; brother, Ken Suttles (Joyce); sisters-in-law, Jean, Doris, and Evelyn Suttles; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Alston Suttles; brothers, Ron, Clyde, Jay, and Tom Suttles; and a sister, Elean Suttles DeVinney.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Monday, December 17, 2018 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. in the church with Dr. Jack Hodges officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the US Navy.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
