James Vernon "Buck" Powell, 84, of Powell Loop, Nebo died Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Autumn Care of Marion. He was born in Burke County on November 4, 1925 and was a son of the late Ira Elmer and Mary Ellen Phillips Powell. Mr. Powell was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a devoted Christian and faithful member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church. Buck was an avid quail and fox hunter, and he enjoyed gardening and watching things grow.Buck is survived by his sons, Fred, Jeff, and Andy Powell all of Nebo, and Chris Powell and his wife, Teresa, of Marion; his sisters, Inez Hemphill and Bennie Bailey both of Morganton; his grandchildren, Ted, Jennifer, Kendall, Justin, Amanda, Angela, and Jonathan Powell, Crystal Bingham, Heather Toney, and Erica Barrier; great-grandchildren, Dalton and Bayleigh Powell, Landon Toney, and Aiden Bingham; and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Freida Henline Powell; his daughter, Joyce Powell; and by several brothers and sisters.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Snow Hill United Methodist Church with Reverends Steve Durham and Bruce Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral.
