James Wilmont Tinney Sr. (91 years old) of Glen Alpine, NC passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 2,2024.

Jim was born in Sylacauga, AL on May 29, 1933, to Howell and Azile Tinney. He is survived by his wife Betty of 71 years. They were married on June 28, 1953, and together they have 2 children: Gloria Raye (Terry) and Jimmy (Sue). They have 3 granddaughters: Heather Starnes (Ben), Sara Hilton and Rachel Hilton. They have 4 great grandchildren: Silas, Noah, Scarlet and Lucy.

He was preceded in death by his siblings: Elizabeth Smith (Otis), William (Sandy), Blanchard, Monroe Terrell, Jerry, and Peggy. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Glenda, Jean, and Laura.

His love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, was evident by his years of service in church ministry. Jim served as Sunday School teacher, Deacon, chaired many committees and served in missions. He and Betty have been members of First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine for 20 years.

Jim’s career in theatre management spanned 30 years. This took him and Betty to Anniston Alabama, Atlanta Georgia, Kingsport Tennessee, Augusta Georgia and Charlotte, NC.

His entrepreneurial spirit led him to a variety of business ventures over the years. These included an ice-skating rink, Mr. Softee ice cream trucks, Snappy Hamburger diner, Peanut Shacks, Orange Julius, T-Raye’s, Sweet and Salty, Sweet and Nutty, Cookies and Cream, Tropical Snow and J & B Ice Cream Shop.

He was also a member of Rotary Club, Optimist Club and Ruritan Club.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home. The graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill, NC.

The family would like to extend a special heart-felt thank you to Amorem Hospice of Burke and Caldwell County. They would also like to thank Brenda Suttles for the compassionate care shown to James.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Amorem Hospice or to the Glen Alpine Food Pantry.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
