Janette Smart Newton

Janette Smart Newton, 77, of Morganton, NC died Friday, May 20, 2016 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care. Born June 15, 1938 in Rutherford County, NC she was a daughter of the late Thomas Oliver Smart and Ruth Mitchell Smart.
Mrs. Newton was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother. She was a member of Poarch Chapel Missionary Methodist Church where she had 52 years of perfect attendance. Janette loved her flower garden.
Mrs. Newton is survived by her husband, Virgil Charles Newton; daughter, Connie Sue “Susie” Smith and husband, Wallace of Morganton; grandchildren, Chad Smith and wife, Shelia, Derrick Smith, and Stetson Smith; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Jordan, Olivia, Elisha, and Macie; and great-great- grandson, Wyatt. Mrs. Newton is also survived by brothers, Oliver, Howard, and Steve Smart; sister, Carolyn Smart Rhom; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ray and Nell Goforth of Hendersonville, NC.
The family will receive friends, from 2 – 3:30 p.m., Monday, May 23, 2016 at Poarch Chapel Missionary Methodist Church. The funeral will follow in the church at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Wallace Smith and Rev. Lamar Hewitt officiating. Entombment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
