Jean Elizabeth Mayne Welter, age 94, died on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Grace Ridge Retirement Community in Morganton, NC. She was born on February 16, 1920 in Noblesville, IN to Floyd and Dorothy Mayne. She married Charles R. Welter, now deceased, in 1941 at which time they moved to South Charleston, WV where she and Chuck raised five children. Jean served as an Elder and was a pianist for the First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston. In 1996 Jean and Chuck moved to Grace Ridge, where they became active members of Grace Ridge, Morganton and of the church. Jean served again as an Elder for First Presbyterian Church of Morganton and was part of the committee for planning and building the Columbarium where she will be inurned with her husband. She was a member of "The Book Club", a long-standing member of PEO, as well as her college sorority, Alpha Phi.In addition to her parents and her husband, Jean was preceded in death by her sisters, Barbara Gasser of Evanston, IN and Phyllis "Sue" Wehking of Ontario, Canada.Mrs. Welter is survived by her five children; Phyllis (husband, Ken) Gadd of Warrenton, VA, Elizabeth Welter of North Wilkesboro, NC, William (wife, Patricia) Welter of Sedona, AZ, Steven (wife, Karen) Welter of Whitehall, MI, and Robin (husband, Jerry) Dotson of Cary, NC. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.Jean’s family would like to express our thanks and deep appreciation to all the friends, residents, and staff of Grace Ridge for your love and support of our mother, especially during these last years. May the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the Communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church Chapel with Rev. Michael Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship Fund of Grace Ridge, 500 Lenoir Rd, Morganton, NC 28655 or to the charity of your choice. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with arrangements.
