Jerry Doyle Stewart

Jerry Doyle Stewart, 73, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2017, in Asheville at Mission Hospital’s Acute Care Specialty Hospital. He was born November 8, 1943 and was a son of the late Arthur L. and Thelma Capps Stewart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers David Allen and James Kenneth Stewart, adopted brothers, Bobby L. Hall of Morganton, Jackie Capps of Bessemer City, NC and special nephew Scott Stewart.
Jerry is fortunate to have two church families. He attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for many years and later on he attended Burkemont Baptist Church, both in the Morganton NC area. Jerry loved going to church and attended regularly until his declining health prevented him from attending. More recently, he found a loving and caring group at the Shaire Retirement Center in Lenoir, NC where he attended services every Sunday.
As an infant, Jerry was diagnosed with Meningitis, and this disease caused his deafness. He later entered the North Carolina School for the Deaf, finishing his education in the early 1970’s. He worked in the furniture industry in the Morganton, NC area for many years before retiring from Henredon Furniture Company with over twenty five years of service. He was always dedicated and committed to his job and workplace which caused him to have many years of perfect work attendance.
He is survived by a sister, Theola S. Hall, and brother, Arthur L. (Lee) Stewart Jr., and wife Barbara of Morganton, NC, sister-in-law Edna Stewart of Savannah, GA, and special uncles Henry V. Stewart and William J. (Bill) Stewart of Morganton, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 6, at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. A funeral service will follow at 1:30 pm with the Reverend Eddy Bunton officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to either, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 2396 Enola Road, Morganton, NC 28655 or Burkemont Baptist Church, 4668 Burkemont Rd. Morganton, NC 28655.
