Jerry “George” William Rhyne, born April 26, 1942, age 82 of Glen Alpine, went to be with his Heavenly Father on July 24, 2024 after an extended period of declining health.

George is survived by his 3 sons: Alan (Vance), Keith and Richard Rhyne, his 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, brothers Kenneth Rhyne (Alice) of Glen Alpine, Patrick Rhyne (Gayle) of Fayetteville, sister Patricia Walker (Warren) of Leland and close neighbors and friends Cynthia and Josephine and the mother of his children Martha Lequire Hughes of Murphy.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Edith Campbell Rhyne of Saltville, VA and formerly of Valdese, his father Denver Finley Rhyne of Avery County, and brothers Claude (Bob) Campbell and Vance Jones.

George worked for the City of Morganton in the solid waste department and in the textile industry for over 30 years. He loved hunting and fishing and taught his 3 sons the sport of each. He always followed and supported his sons in sports and never missed a game. He was very proud of his sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman who some called the, “Mayor of the Spillway”. George was not one for gossip and would lend a hand to anyone in need. He lived a quiet life with his cats and often took day trips with his son Keith, who helped care for him at the end of his life. George will be missed by many, but especially his family, who suspect he entered the Gates of Heaven, only long enough to grab a fishing pole to head to the Eternal Lake for fishing and to catch up with those who had gone before him.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life service at a later date.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Most of my memories of Jerry were in our younger years when my sister and I would go to “Tater Town “ and spend a week or two with our cousins. Jerry was always around, though he never had much to say, keeping a watchful eye on us and his younger siblings. Jerry was a good soul. My heart goes out to his children, siblings, all family and friends, because I know you will miss him. Hold on to those loving happy memories. Cousin Sharon

I grew up beside Jerry and watched his family grow up. He was a good man. He taught me how to fish and hunt. He also taught me how to drive I straight drive car on 105 mountain. George love to go trout fishing in Avery county and took me with him all the time. If there was ever a man that loved the outdoors, it was George. My deepest condolences to the family. David Meise

2 Cornthians 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight)5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.5:9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Many people knew my Pop but most will not know the hardship and struggles you endured. From your humble childhood with less than a 3rd grade education born in times where the struggle was real in Avery County NC (tater town) as a younger sibling where food was scarce but tough Love was abound. From the times where a special treat such as bowl of banana pudding as kid was heaven. Pop as your Youngest Son I felt your pain and heard about your struggles as you shared it with me and we lived it. Pop you endured and ended up with a family legacy that will withstand time. You were there for me and so many others and as time goes by I hope each one has a moment to reflect when that moment was in there life.

My Uncle George was a very interesting individual to say the least . I will always love ,respect and admire him. He overcame several obstacles in his life that a lot of people will never accomplish . He taught me everything I know about hunting and fishing and poker . In his honor I have tried to pass it on to my son. I have many fond memories and experiences with him from my growing up teenage years . I will cherish that forever . He will be missed. I love George. Tell Edith Hello .
