Jerry Vernon Fleming, 72, of Morganton, NC went to be with God on Friday, April 29, 2011. God decided he needed him more than us. He was a member of South Mountain Baptist Church. God chose one of the most precious jewels to shine in heaven for him. Born in Burke County, NC on May 9, 1938, he was the son of the late John Vernon Fleming and Elemena Walker Fleming.Jerry was one of a kind. He believed a man was as good as his word. He was honest, trustworthy, and a true believer in God. He helped everyone that he knew and people he didn’t know.Mr. Fleming started Fleming Grading in 1969. Many people said he was the best they’d ever seen operate machinery. Before going into business for himself, he worked for Helms and Kay Construction. He helped build Beech Mountain, The Land of Oz. He also worked in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. Jerry was a lifetime member of Camp 836 Sons of the Confederate Veterans, National and Divisional.In addition to his father, John Vernon Fleming and his mother, Elemena Fleming, Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Darryl Fleming; and a grandson, Terry Lee Fleming, Jr.Jerry is survived by his wife, Iris Fleming, of the home; sons, Bruce Fleming and wife, Jean, Terry Fleming and wife, Regina, Bryon Fleming and wife, Tammy, and Todd Fleming and wife, Karen, all of Morganton; a special son, Dominic Perham and wife, Sandy; a special daughter, Sabrina Woolridge and husband, Kevin, of Morganton; grandsons, Jerry D., Cody V., Clint, Wyatt, and Weston Fleming; granddaughters, Amanda Maltry and husband Joe, and Megan Fleming; great-grandsons, Colt and Dawson Woolridge, and Laighton Maltry; and great-granddaughters, Jade Woolridge, Tessa Rector, and Sara Fleming. In remembrance are Cole, Hunter, and Jared. He is also survived by a brother, Toney Fleming and wife, Barbara, of Morganton; a sister, Brenda Haynes and husband, Darryl, of Morganton; nephews, Brad Haynes and Dwayne Fleming; and numerous family members, among them, Pat and Lisa. There is no way we can express our love.The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at South Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Annas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall one hour before the funeral service. At other times the family will be at the home on Walker Perry Rd., Morganton. Memorial contributions may be made to South Mountain Baptist Church, PO Box 3927, Morganton, NC 28680.
