Jesse "J.C." Haynes, 92, of Morganton passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Grace Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Cleveland County, NC on October 14, 1919, he was the son of the late John Dargin Haynes and Zulia Carter Haynes. J.C. was a faithful member of Mount Home Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of several South Pacific Campaigns in WWII and was also a veteran of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He retired from Broughton Hospital after 30 years but stayed busy. He loved to read and garden.J.C. is survived by his wife of 63 years, Velma Pruett Haynes of the home; sons, Ronald Haynes of Taylorsville, NC, Randall Haynes and wife, Jean, of Arlington, TN, and Jeffery Haynes and wife, Amy, of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Jessica Stine and husband, Dan, of Jackson, TN; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; brothers, John Haynes of Forest City, NC and Hal Haynes of Claremont, CA; a sister, Beatrice Bell of San Luis Obispo, CA; and a number of nephews and nieces.In addition to his parents, J.C. was preceded in death by two brothers, E.Y. Haynes and Bob Haynes; and a sister, Edith Hughes.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Mount Home Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Gamble officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Polkville United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Home Baptist Church Building Fund, 2272 Mt. Home Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
