On Saturday, May 14, 2022, the family of Jesse Turner Long, 102, lost a great, kind, and spiritual man. Born on September 1, 1919, he was the son of the late James H. and Cordie Long. Jesse was a member of Asheville Street Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Training Union Director, on the Baptism Committee, choir member, and Brotherhood Director. He was an US Army Veteran serving in WWII. Jesse retired from Drexel Heritage with 54 plus years of service. After retirement, he worked for Food Lion as a bagger. He was a very generous man who never met a stranger. Jesse loved God, his church, and his family.
Jesse is survived by his daughter, Frances Whisnant; grandson, Jeffery A. Whisnant (Sandra); great-grandchildren, Ashley Whisnant, Tyler Whisnant, Shaelyn Carson; step-greatgrandchildren, Nichole Hendrix, Deni Smith (Brandon); many nieces and nephews; 5 great great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Smith, Maddie Smith, Rylee Smith, Keara Hendrix, Lakada Nissen.
In addition, his parents, Jesse is preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle “Bill” Lewis Long; 10 brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 11am, Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at Forest Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Goforth officiating. The family will speak to friends following the graveside. Military honors provided by the NC National Guard.
