Jewell Farris Self

Jewell Farris Self, 64, of Morganton went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 9, 2013 following a brief illness. Born in Burke County, NC on April 2, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Wilburn "Boots" Farris and Grace Hoyle Farris. Jewell was a member of Mtn. View #2 Baptist Church for over 40 years and served in the nursery for over 30 years. She worked at Grace Hospital for 24 years and retired from J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center in 2010 with seven years of service. Jewell enjoyed watching her grandson’s ballgames; she was his biggest fan.Jewell is survived by her husband of 42 years (March 21st would have been their 43rd anniversary) James "Jay" Self of the home; a daughter, Christy Mays and her husband, Richie, of Morganton; her grandson and pride of her life, Landon Mays; siblings, David Farris and his wife, Teresa, Pete Farris and his wife, Hilda, Jerry Farris and his wife, Jackie, and Ursula Farris McDaniels, all of Morganton; and a number of nephews and nieces.In addition to her parents, Jewel was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Annette Self; a brother, J.C. Farris; and a sister, Janie Farris Watson.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 11, 2013 at Mtn. View #2 Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Mashburn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center where the body will remain until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service.
