Jimmy Leroy Stewart, 73, one of God’s greats, lost his short battle with esophageal cancer and is now in the hands of his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 13, 2024. He was born on April 15, 1951 in Burke County to the late Raleigh Stewart and Annie Moore Stewart. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a 1969 graduate of Salem High School. He was also a member of The Gideons International-Burke West Camp. Jimmy was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and role model who made a huge impact on the Burke County community. Following in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps, he led the family-owned construction company where he fulfilled many Burke County residents’ dreams by building hundreds of custom homes, churches and community buildings including Sossoman Funeral Home. He was also a classic car enthusiast who knew more about cars than Mecum.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Johnson Stewart; his children, Melisa Wellman (Jeff), Natasha Stewart, Jeremy Stewart, and Jessie Stewart (fiancé, Michael Shook); grandchildren, Blake Wellman, Alec Wellman, Madilee Wellman, Juli Stewart, Grant Stewart, Clara Stewart, Caroline Stewart and Jameson Crowder; sisters, Doris Smith (Perry), Margaret Coffin (David) and Linda Miller. Also surviving is his business partner of 35 years, Kenneth L. Burnette and also his canine companion, Georgia.

The family will receive friends from 5pm-7pm on Friday, September 20, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2pm, Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. Braden Martin and Dr. Danny Emory officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hopewell Baptist Church, 1112 Hopewell Rd, Morganton, NC 28655, The Gideons International-Burke West Camp, PO Box 678, Morganton, NC 28655, or to Touch the World Ministries, PO Box 218, Todd, NC 28684.

Martha, My heart and prayers go out to you. Jimmy was and always will be a treasure to everyone who knew him. I know the pain of losing a husband too soon. Pray, eat, rest, lean on your wonderful family, put one foot in front of the other taking one day at a time, and breathe. God will give you the strength and peace to continue your journey. All my love......
