Joan Lenora Dioguardi Cole, 89, of Morganton, NC passed away, Friday, January 29, 2021. She was born on October 13, 1931 in Fairfield, CT to the late Joseph Dioguardi and Mary Helen Nessel Dioguardi. Joan worked as a draftswoman in a man’s world. She was a seamstress since she was 14 years old and a quilter since 1985, winning many ribbons. Many of these quilts are hanging on the walls of her home and many given to charities. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Morganton. Joan was married to the late John William Cole on July 19, 1952.
She is survived by her children, Susan Rice, Gary Cole (Pia), Mitchell Cole (Judy-Ann) and Melissa Shaw (Gerry); grandchildren, Heidi Van Gieson, Danielle Cole, Bryan Simmet-Cole, Matthew Shaw, Adam Shaw and Nathaniel Shaw: great-grandchildren, Riley Simmet-Cole, Landon Simmet-Cole, Anabella VanGieson, and Harrison Shaw.
In addition to her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her husband, John William Cole; son-in-law, Dennis Rice.
A celebration of Ms. Cole’s Life will be held at a later date.
The family requests memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
