Joanne Lee Elkert, 73, died Friday, December 5, 2008, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. Mrs. Elkert was born on November 1, 1935 in Munising, Michigan and was one of five children of the late Orville J. Revord and Lillian Thorton Revord. She was a graduate of Munising’s Mather High School, class of 1953. Joanne married Charles A. Elkert of Wetmore, Michigan on August 29, 1953 in Munising. They resided in Lumberton, North Carolina from 1968 until 1995 when they moved to Morganton and have lived here since that time.Joanne was an accomplished musician who recorded several of her own songs and taught piano lessons to many children in Lumberton. She also enjoyed traveling, scuba diving, and taking flying lessons.Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Charles A. Elkert; a son, Paul D. Elkert, and his wife, Lynn, of Vermont; daughters, Vicki Elkert Harris and her husband, William, of Barnardsville, NC, Phyllis Price and her husband, Nick, of Morganton, and Colleen Carter and her husband, Bryan, of Avon, Indiana; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and brothers, Orville Revord of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Raoul Revord of Wetmore, Michigan.In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by a son, Dean Charles Elkert.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 8, 2008, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Lawing officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
