Joe A. Woody

Joe A. Woody, 92, of Morganton, died Saturday, January 4, 2014. He was born on March 2, 1921 in Avery County to the late Simeon and Cordelia Bowman Woody. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Benfield Woody and brother, Coy Woody. Joe was a member of Big Meadows Baptist Church of Newland, NC and also attended Mull’s Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Broughton Hospital where he worked for over 30 years and was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.Surviving are sons, Joey Woody and wife, Lynda of Morganton and Lawson D. Woody and wife, Audrey of Avery County; grandchildren, Eric Woody and wife, Shanda, and Heather Woody; and great-grandchildren, Aaron and Lindsay.The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Big Meadows Baptist Church with Reverend Keith Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the Big Meadows Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sossoman Funeral Home on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. At other times the family will be at the home of Joey and Lynda.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Big Meadows Baptist Church, 1985 Horney Rd., Newland, NC 28657.
