Joe Mack Powell, Sr. 76, of Joe Powell Rd., Morganton, NC died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born in Avery County, NC on April 30, 1930 and was a son of the late Arthur Leonard Powell and Maude Holtsclaw Moore. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Joe Mack Powell, Jr.; his daughter, Sheena Winkler; a sister, Ruby Hoilman; and an infant sister, Anna Lee Powell. Mr. Powell was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church in Marion. He was an avid Nascar race fan and enjoyed traveling. Mr. Powell was a talented craftsman and inventor and worked with metal and wood in his shop.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Goff Powell, of the home; sons, Charles Powell and his wife, Kathy, Edward Powell, and Donnie Powell and his wife, Amy, all of Morganton; brothers and their wives, Wade and Margaret Powell of the Chesterfield community and Paul and Mildred Powell of Morganton; a sister, Virginia Heffinger, of Forest, VA; eleven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Van Harold Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home, 4879 Joe Powell Rd..
