Joe Powell, 66, of the Lake James Community went to his eternal home on Sunday, June 29, 2014. Born in Burke County, NC on December 10, 1947, he was the son of the late Lewis Edgar Powell and Jessie Cornelia Upchurch Powell. Joe was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a Christian with a strong faith in the Lord. He worked for Boyd’s Sheet Metal and Guttering, had also worked for Powell’s Home Repair, and an avid farmer.
Joe is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frances Clark Powell of the home; children, Melody Greer and her husband, Mike, of Lenoir, NC, Charity Powell of Morganton, Laura Clark and her husband, Martin, of Morganton, and Trinity "Joey" Powell of Lake James; grandchildren, Tyler and Keaton Greer, Gavin and Mason Justice, McKinley and Emery Clark, and Trinity G., Maddison , and Caroline Powell; brothers, Bobby, Wayne, and David Powell; a sister, Patricia Elrod; and his much-loved canine companion, Gypsy Rose.
The graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC with the Rev. Ralph Shuffler and the Rev. Randy Clark officiating. Military honors will be provided by the N. C. National Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. At other times the family will be at the residence of the daughter, Laura Clark.
