John Calvin Coffey, 72, of Morganton, NC went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 after a battle with cancer. Born on April 8, 1946 in Burke County, he was a son of the late Roy Coffey and Nanny Mooney Coffey.
Mr. Coffey was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps. Mr. Coffey retired from J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, formerly known as Western Carolina Center. He enjoyed doing anything outside and especially liked working with his John Deere mower. He really liked spending time with his little buddy, Pixie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Warlick; and brothers, Wayne Coffey and Preston Coffey.
Mr. Coffey is survived by his wife, Millie Maloney Coffey; children, Roy Coffey and wife, Karen, Frances Walker and husband, Scott; stepchildren, Michele Cooke and husband, Alan, Ronnie Burnette, and William Beck and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Cory Coffey and wife, Brooke, Chase, Kaylee, and Reid Walker, Dakota Wilson and wife, Lisa, of New York, Austin Wilson, Kelsey Burnette, Wayne Burnette, Mason Beck, and Samantha Beck; sisters, Frances Whisnant, Brenda Palson and husband, Buster, of South Carolina; brother, Ned Coffey; sister-in-law, Esther Coffey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Monday, May 28, 2018 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The funeral will be 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2018 in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Kenneth Milan and Rev. Dakota Wilson officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors provided by US Marine Corps and Caldwell County Veterans Honors Guard.
