John Flynn, 59, of Old NC 105, Nebo, NC died Sunday, March 5, 2006 at the VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC following a lengthy illness. He was born October 5, 1946 in Burke County, NC, and was a son of Bertie Edwards Michaels of Morganton, and the late John Frank Flynn, Sr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Walt Michaels. John was an 18 year veteran of the US Army and served three tours in Vietnam. He retired due to a service connected disability from the US Army. John was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Diane Vaughan Flynn of the home; a son, Byran Flynn of McDowell County; a daughter, Michelle F. Freeman and husband, Max of Morganton; a step-son, Steven Paul Robinson of Myrtle Beach, SC; a step-daughter, Angela Jean Perkins and husband, "Buttons" of Pearisburg, VA; a brother, Sammy Flynn and wife, Mae of Nebo; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 9, 2006 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Nebo with military graveside rites conducted by the Valdese American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour before the service at the funeral home.
