John Henry Powell

John Henry Powell. 83, of Conover, NC and formerly of Drexel, NC, died Saturday, February 13, 2016. Born in Burke County, NC on January 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Owens Bascom Powell and Nannie Viola Cooper Powell. John served in Biloxi, MS and in France with the US Air Force during the Korean War. Retired accountant with the Great Lakes Carbon Corp. Member and past president of the Lions Club in Ozark, AR. Past member of Drexel Garden Club. Member of American Legion Post 16, Newton, NC. Loved feeding “his” birds and he was a kind and loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

John is survived by his wife, Liliane Eustache Powell; daughter, Madeleine Powell Murr and husband, Tim of Hickory; granddaughter, Natalie Jensen of New York, NY; sister, Rebecca Dalmas of Hickory and a number of nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Drexel Memorial Park with Rev. D. Randall Hall officiating. The family will receive friends at Christ United Methodist Church following the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 16, 1020 Southwest Blvd., Newton, NC 28658 or to Christ United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 38, Drexel, NC 28619.
