John “Jack” Stanley Moncrief passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022. He was 88 years old. Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, he was the only child of the late Earl Stanley Moncrief and Margaret Sagers Moncrief. Jack graduated from Rider College (now Rider University) in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. In Trenton, he met Patricia Kennedy while in her second year of nursing school. They married in 1959 and moved to Lancaster County, PA where their three children were born.
Jack began his 38-year career in corrugated paper product sales with West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company (later Westvaco and currently WestRock) in Pennsylvania with relocations to Georgia and North Carolina. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 1996.
Jack was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, most recently a member of First United Methodist in Morganton, NC. He was an active member of the United Methodist Men at First United Methodist in Gastonia, NC and Bethany United Methodist Church in West Jefferson. His personal interests centered on his family activities, including participation in Y-Indian Guides & Y-Indian Princess, sailing at Lake Norman Yacht Club where he once served as Vice Commodore, camping and traveling.
He loved his retirement in the North Carolina mountains where he enjoyed log cabin life, including feeding the birds and spending time with neighbors in Todd, NC for 24 years. Through the years Jack spent many weeks on Sanibel Island and Kelly Greens community in Ft. Myers, FL with family. He cherished his Scottish heritage with his regular attendance at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and served as the North Carolina Commissioner of the Clan Moncreiffe Society for several years. Jack and Pat moved to Morganton in 2018. He enjoyed family celebrations…and especially keeping up with his grandchildren. Jack never met a stranger and loved to tell a good joke.
Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pat; daughter Laurie Moncrief Miller and husband Mark also from Morganton, NC; son John Scott Moncrief and wife Barbara from Burnsville, NC; daughter Jill Moncrief Stupalsky and husband Joe from Fort Myers, FL; grandchildren Grey S. Miller, Emma M. Miller, Ashley Long, Kristen Peterson, J. Stephen Moncrief, and William J. Stupalsky. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
