Jonathan “Doc” Secrest, 71, of Morganton, NC, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2016, at Catawba Regional Hospice. He was born July 3, 1945, in Burke County to the late Eugene Secrest and Amanda Hall Secrest. Jonathan was a Veteran of the United States Army Security Agency, having served in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from the NC Employment Security Commission with over 30 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Secrest; sisters, Ruth Alexander, Rachel Surratt and Eunice Burgess. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan Goodman Secrest; sons, Jason Secrest of Cary, NC and Adam Secrest and wife, Christie Secrest of Augusta, GA; brother, Joseph Secrest of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sisters, Carolyn McDaniel of Morganton, NC and Hannah Baker of Atlanta, GA. A Celebration of Jonathan’s Life will be held at 11:00am on Monday, September 12, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church of Valdese, NC with the Rev. Dr. Jeffery Sweeney officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church. A private burial will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 217 Saint Germain Ave. SE, Valdese, NC 28690 or to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton, NC 28658. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
