Joseph Paul Watts, 91, of Drexel, NC died Saturday, November 29, 2014 while surrounded by his family. Born in Burke County, NC on May 8, 1923, he was the son of the late John Nelson Watts and Effie Grady Hoyle Watts. Mr. Watts attended Pleasant View Baptist Church and retired from Fredrickson Trucking Company.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and served on the U.S.S. Missouri where he witnessed the signing of the peace treaty with Japan.
Joseph is survived by his son, Joe Watts and his wife, Debbie, of Newton, NC; a daughter, Linda Hughes of Drexel; grandchildren, Jonathon Watts, Jordan Watts and his wife, Corrina, Shanda Adkins and her husband, J.K., Marta Franklin and her husband, Eric, and Tara McGarrigan and her husband, D.J.; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Pearl Franklin Watts; a brother, John Henry Watts; and a sister, Belle Watts Bowen.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2014 at Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Burt Wilbur and the Rev. Dr. John Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
