Joseph R. "Joe" Stanley

Joseph R. "Joe" Stanley, 86 of Garner, NC and a former Morganton resident died Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Hospice of Wake County, Raleigh, NC. Born in Ashe County, NC on March 16, 1926, he was a son of the late Joseph Aaron Stanley and Mary Perkins Stanley. He was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran and for over thirty-five years he served with the Delaware Army National Guard until his retirement in 1982. Joe was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Morganton. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Smith Stanley; two brothers and two sisters.Surviving are his sons, John Stanley of New Castle, DE and Joseph R. Stanley, Jr. and wife, Lynette of Martinsburg, WV; daughters, Elizabeth Wade and husband, James of Garner, NC and Deborah Rogers and husband, Richard of Bear, DE; grandchildren, Jana Stanley, Laura Wood, Matthew Wade, Aaron Wade, Seth Rogers, and Adam Wade; great grandchildren, Joseph Simmons, Jordan Bosworth, Jessi-Lynn Simmons, Chloe Bosworth, Reese Wade, and Presley Wade; two brothers and three sisters; and a sister-in-law, Hennie Stewart.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Larry Cline officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour before the service.
