Joyce Harklerode Evans, 84, of Morganton, NC, passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018. Born January 21, 1934 in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Herman Earl Harklerode and Pearl Edith Johnson Harklerode.
Mrs. Evans was a retired registered nurse from Grace Hospital and a retired church hostess from First Baptist Church of Morganton. She graduated from Marion High School and Grace Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1955. Mrs. Evans was a member of First Baptist Church of Morganton, Pilot Club of Morganton where she was their Sweetheart of the Year in 2001, member of Alder Springs Herb Growers, former volunteer at Burke Hospice, a former Girl Scout Leader, and a former Boy Scout Den Mother.
Mrs. Evans is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Douglas R. Evans; daughter, Edith Evans-Bisbee and spouse; sons, John Edward Evans (Dawn), Rev. Michael Evans (Dell); grandchildren, Joshua Evans, Rachel Evans, David Evans, Jordan Bisbee and Ethan Bisbee; great-granddaughter, Erin Joy Bisbee; sisters, Marybelle Henline, Janice Guffey; brother, Gordon Harklerode; and many loved nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and a lifetime full of friends.
In addition to her parents, Joyce is preceded in death by her sisters, Norma Hogan, Geraldine Brown, Christine Guffey, Martha Thomas; brothers, C.W. Harklerode, James “Bud” Harklerode, Jack Harklerode, and Glenn Harklerode.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2018 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Morganton. The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. also in the sanctuary of the church with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. The graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, October 29, 2018 at McDowell Memorial Park in Marion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Gate - Gateway to Independence, PO Box 6033, Maryville TN 37802. The Gate is a nonprofit organization for adults with disabilities where her grandson Joshua attends. Memorial contributions can also be made to First Baptist Church of Morganton, PO Box 459, Morganton, NC 28680.
