Lawrence Whiteside, 78, transitioned from labor to reward October 16, 2018. He had a 20-year battle with Leukemia and other health difficulties. He was in Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. Born August 14, 1940 in Burke County, he was the son of the late Lack Thomas Whiteside and the late Geneva Cuthbertson Whiteside. He was a faithful member of Shiloh AME Church, Morganton NC. Serving as a Steward and member of the Sons of Allen. In 2011 he was chosen Shiloh’s "Man of the Year". His church work was a personal mission of joy for him and he was always willing to help his fellow brethren. He was a graduate of Olive Hill High School and studied at Winston-Salem State Teachers College. He enjoyed all sports and took pleasure in a good round of golf. He was a member of North State Football Officials Association for 35 years and received the Distinguished Service Award from the NC Athletic Officials Association in 2002.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was his six brothers: Fred Whiteside, Grover Whiteside, Oscar Whiteside, John C. Whiteside, Edward Whiteside and Lack Thomas Whiteside Jr; five sisters, Annie G Powell, Stella Whiteside, Clara Belle Rutherford, Georgia Smith and Lula Francis.
A loving family group to cherish his memory which includes his wife Loretta Thomas-Whiteside of 52 yrs., devoted son Elder Lawrence (Dorothy) Whiteside II, brother David (Evelyn) Whiteside and sister Nancy Dixon. Four grandsons Evan, Miguel, Kenneth and Sterling and six great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and special friends.
The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 19, 2018 at Shiloh AME Church. The funeral service will be held in the church at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
