Lena Fortune

Lena Fortune, 97, of Morganton, NC passed away Friday, June 3, 2022.

Born in Burke County, NC on January 17, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William Lawrence Setzer and Minnie Alice Ross Setzer.  Lena was a member of First Baptist Church of Morganton and was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was heavily involved in the Women’s Missionary Union and sang in the choir.  Mrs. Setzer worked for over 20 years as a switchboard operator at Broughton Hospital.

Lena made the best fried apple pies in the world and loved to give them as gifts.  She had a green thumb and loved her flowers.

Lena is survived by her beloved family, including her husband, William “Bud” Fortune; sister, Charlotte Hendrix; nieces, Debbie Hendrix Christian, Libby Setzer Williams (Ben), and Susan Setzer Rice (Dwight); and nephews, Doug Setzer (Debbie), and James Setzer (Kathy).

In addition to her parents, Lena was preceded in death by her twin brother, Leonard Setzer; sister, Ruth Setzer; and brother, Carol Setzer.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Monday, June 13, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Morganton.  The memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. in the church with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr., Rev. Larry Thompson, Rev. William Deal, and Rev. Allison Pryor officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Amorem Hospice or to First Baptist Church of Morganton.
